Johnny Aubert may not be the fresh surprise in the World Enduro Championship that he was in 2006 but there is little doubt among followers of this particular discipline that the talented Frenchman is a world champion-in-waiting.
Thirteen years after becoming 80cc World Motocross Champion Aubert set the Enduro scene alight in his first season during ‘06. Having raced in both the World Motocross Championship and in the US National Motocross Championship Aubert took to the WEC better and quicker than anyone could have imagined. Aboard his WR450F the aggressive Frenchman started the year with two podium finishes and then continued to tussle with the established Enduro stars. Unable to make a major impression in the motocross world due to injury problems, Aubert used his smooth style to better use in Enduro and became an instant star in terms of his capabilities. Aubert stood upon the top step of the E2 class podium on three occasions during his rookie season, having taken the many technical and physical challenges of the WEC in his stride.
Now a major player in the UFO Course Yamaha team, he used the experience gained in 2006 to go head-to-head with world championship big-hitters Samuli Aro and Mika Ahola in 2007. Aubert claimed no fewer than seven day wins to place a deserved third in the E2 championship standings – a result that might have been better still had he not cruelly failed to finish the second day of the GP of Italy.
Dominating the Spanish, Portuguese, Slovakian and French rounds of the series, Aubert’s defining moment of ’07 was his outright victory and performance at the 82nd running of the International Six Days Enduro in Chile. Johnny Aubert will start the ’08 WEC series with one simple goal – to win the E2 world championship.
