A winner of four AMA championships across the motocross and supercross disciplines, Grant Langston is one of the most successful riders currently competing on American shores.
The South African made his transatlantic step after impressing in the FIM Motocross World Championship and taking the 125cc (now MX2) title at his second full attempt in 2000. He was unlucky not to own back-to-back titles in his first AMA season when he suffered a mechanical failure in the very last race of 2002. In the last five years Langston has experienced high points, such as his 2005 and 2006 Lites SX titles on both coasts, finally grabbing the AMA MX crown in 2003, and even a national Supermoto accolade, but there have also been low moments with injury problems preventing a sustained period of dominance at the top.
Joining Yamaha for 2007 injected fresh impetus into Langston’s career as he left behind the Lites categories to make an impression on the senior class and aboard the YZ450F. A strong run towards the end of the AMA Motocross season saw the 25 year old grow in confidence and speed. His results brought him the coveted prize and the first National championship for Yamaha since 1998. To crown a decent term he also competed for his country at the Motocross of Nations at Budds Creek and then won the glamorous US Open Supercross a few weeks later.
Amiable and down-to-earth, Grant still commits to both motocross and supercross although the heavy demands of both calendars are now forcing riders to narrow their priorities. He is likely to be a protagonist for wins and podiums outdoors and will mount a stern title defence once the motocross schedule kicks off in the summer.
