Millville Served Up Crazy Conditions with Four of Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing Team’s Riders Inside the Top 10

Dylan Ferrandis led the way for his Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing Team at Spring Creek MX Park in Millville, Minnesota as four out of five team riders rode to finishes inside the top 10. The area saw torrential downpour on Saturday morning that led to a delayed start and crazy conditions but Ferrandis finished just off the podium in fourth overall (5-4), while Colt Nichols was sixth overall (14-2) bouncing back from a tough first moto. Justin Cooper finished seventh overall (7-10), while Ty Masterpool rounded out the top 10 (11-13).

Ferrandis relied on the strength of his Yamaha YZ250F to manage the tough conditions at Round 8 and it paid off as he earned fourth overall. The first moto saw him quickly settle into fourth and was trying to maintain the position in the treacherous conditions. He was passed late in the race, but still came through with a fifth in moto one. Ferrandis was in salvage mode in moto two after starting mid-pack, but quickly made some great passes to move into fifth by lap five. He continued to push and was able to get into fourth by the end of the race to give him fourth overall.

Nichols has continued to prove he’s capable of top finishes and did just that in Millville. He had a tough go of it in moto one with a 29th place start in the sloppy conditions but managed to make it all the way up to 14th in spite of the challenging track. He was ready to make up for his finish in moto two and got out to a fifth place start. Nichols maintained his speed and eventually held off his teammate Ferrandis to finish second to end the day and sixth overall.

Cooper overcame adversity in both his motos to come away with seventh overall. In moto one, he utilized a solid start to settle into eighth. As he maintained a good position, he pushed his way into seventh where he ended the moto. In the second moto, Cooper grabbed a great start in second but just after halfway went down and had to regroup to come back to 10th for seventh overall.

It was another learning experience for rookie Masterpool. While there have been muddy races already this season, these conditions were more brutal than the previous. He started at the rear of the first moto but put in a hard charge to make it from 36th to 11th by the end of the moto. His second moto start was a bit better in 21st, but the 16yr old wasn’t able to charge as hard and finished 13th.

Unfortunately for Oldenburg, he spent the week leading up to his home race feeling unwell. The day didn’t make it any easier and he crossed the line 29th in moto one. The second moto was a big bounce back for Oldenburg who ended up finishing 14th, which gave him 19th overall. The Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing team heads back west to its annual stop at Washougal MX Park in Washougal, Washington on July 27.

Today was a tough one for us. The conditions were really tough, we had some crashes and inconsistent motos, which set us back. We’ll move onto Washougal and fight back these last four races.

It was kind of a bad day as a whole for me. I had two bad starts and crashed too much during both motos, which really hurt me. I lost some important points for the championship this weekend. We’re going to have to come back big next weekend.

The bike was good today but the conditions were very tough. In the first moto, I had a few crashes and had to come in for goggles, but I was able to have a good second moto to salvage a decent finish. I’m looking forward to Washougal.

The day didn’t go as planned. I had a few crashes in the conditions, but overall I need to be better. I’m definitely fired up for Washougal!

The first moto I went down on the start and then had to do a pitstop, but still ended up 11th. The second moto was another bad start and then I went down halfway through the moto. All in all 10th overall isn’t terrible, but I know I can do better.

Mud can go either way and today it didn’t go my way! The bike was working great but I just have to be better myself. Will be back to work on Monday and we will be ready for Washougal.
