The rookie of the Monster Energy Yamaha Rally Team, Jamie McCanney is ready to embark on his debut Dakar Rally this January. Switching from enduro to rally during 2019, Jamie may be the least experienced rally rider on the team but the world-class enduro racer unquestionably knows his way around a dirt bike
Born and bred on the Isle of Man - the spiritual home of motorcycle racing - two-wheel competition is in Jamie’s blood. Following a promising childhood motocross career, the Manxman switched his attention to enduro in 2012 at the age of 17 and immediately enjoyed success, placing third overall in the FIM Enduro Youth Cup. The following season he secured his first world title.
After an injury-plagued 2014 season, McCanney returned stronger in 2015. Capturing six wins and only missing the podium once, he was crowned FIM Enduro Junior World Champion, adding a second world title to his trophy cabinet. Topping the Enduro 1 standings in the International Six Days Enduro in Slovakia, while also winning the British Enduro Championship, McCanney enjoyed a standout 2015 season.
Joining the Outsiders Yamaha Official Enduro Team for 2016 he wrapped up an injury hit year with four Enduro 1 podium results and an impressive third in the Enduro 2 class at the ISDE in Spain. Favourite to clinch the Enduro 1 crown in 2018, he topped the standings at the midway point in the year thanks to multiple race wins. But a shoulder injury sustained at the GP of Italy ultimately derailed his title ambitions and he eventually finished second.
Moving to rally for 2019, in what has very much been a learning year, Jamie has worked hard to adapt to his new sport. Placing 11th at the Merzouga Rally - boosted by fifth in stage five - has earned him a place on the start line of the 2020 Dakar Rally. A rider full of promise and potential, the Manxman’s goal will be to reach the finish line on January 17th.
