Gonzalez To Start Qatar Night Race from Ninth on the Grid

Correos Prepago Yamaha VR46 Master Camp‘s Manuel Gonzalez showed good early pace around the Lusail International Circuit in the Moto2 Q2 session but struggled to find a time improvement in the second half of the 15-minute shoot-out. Despite this, he secured 9th place on the grid. It was the opposite for teammate Kohta Nozane, who took part in Q1. After a tyre change at the beginning of the session, he was able to push until the chequered flag came out. He will start tomorrow‘s Grand Prix of Qatar Race from 30th place.

Correos Prepago Yamaha VR46 Master Camp‘s Manuel Gonzalez ended an overall productive Super Saturday at the Lusail International Circuit securing 9th place on the grid for the Grand Prix of Qatar Moto2 Race. Kohta Nozane encountered some issues at the start of Q1 which lost him valuable time. He pushed hard on his second run but still found himself in 30th place on the grid.

Gonzalez had shown good pace in the P3 session and was keen to do so again in Q2. His 1‘58.569s benchmark time saw him hold eighth place after all riders completed their first hot lap. The Spaniard followed it up by setting four personal best sectors for a 1‘58.033s that shot him up to third. Unable to improve on his next four attempts, he was relegated to ninth place. Manugasss was keen to push on his last lap, but a red-flag situation with 33 seconds remaining on the clock meant the end of his challenge. He wrapped up the session in ninth.

Nozane took part in Q1, but he had a difficult start. He headed straight back to the pit box for a change of tyres after an unsuccessful opening lap. He headed back out on track with seven minutes to go at the bottom of the standings, as he was yet to complete a full flying lap. He took a few tries to get up to speed. His best time, a 1‘59.429s, set on lap 5/6 kept him in 16th place in the Q1 rankings and put him in 30th position in the qualifying classifications.

The Correos Prepago Yamaha VR46 Master Camp teammates will be back in action on Sunday at 18:15 GMT +3 for the 20-lap race.

"We didn‘t have the qualifying we wanted. I knew I was going to struggle with the new tyre, but I expected to get a better result. I think my pace is one of the strongest, but we need to make a small change to be fast also in the first laps of the race."

"I‘m disappointed with how the qualifying went. I entered to change the tyre, but we lost too much time. My lap time was improving each lap, but it was difficult to do a time attack. Tomorrow it will be important to start well and push a lot."

"Manu missed the fastest lap and had some chattering in the front. Everyone is very fast, but we have a good pace for the race. Of course it would be better to be more towards the front of the grid, but we are still confident.

"Kohta improved compared to the first practice of the day, but he missed some confidence to achieve his objective. Tomorrow it will be important for him to stay and battle with his group."
