Manuel Gonzalez Shows Speed in Assen Moto2 Qualifying Sessions

Manuel Gonzalez Shows Speed in Assen Moto2 Qualifying Sessions

Yamaha VR46 Master Camp Team‘s Manuel Gonzalez impressed with some hot laps in Q1 today, allowing him through to Q2, where he secured P15 for tomorrow‘s starting grid. Keminth Kubo shaved almost one second off his best time from this morning during Q1. He will start the race from P28.

Yamaha VR46 Master Camp Team‘s Manuel Gonzalez proved his qualifying potential at the TT Circuit Assen today. Taking part in the Moto2 Q1 session, he promoted to Q2 and will start tomorrow‘s TT Assen race from P15. Keminth Kubo also pushed to the fullest in today‘s Moto2 Q1 session. The Thai rider finished in 28th place in the overall qualifying results.

Gonzalez showed fierce pace in the Q1 session, setting a 1‘37.275s on his final lap for third place. It promoted him to Q2, where the Spaniard dug deep once again. He set nine laps on top of the eight he completed in Q1. Though his 1‘37.365s best time, set on lap nine, wasn‘t as fast as his Q1 time, it did earn him 15th place on tomorrow‘s grid.

Kubo had spent the second day of the Dutch GP getting used to the dry track conditions and studying the lines. He had to take part in Q1 and was pushing. He clocked a 1‘38.861s on lap 4/9, which was almost a second faster than his FP3 time. He ended the session in 14th place and will start tomorrow‘s race from P28.

Sports Director

"It‘s been a positive day on Manu‘s side of the garage. He had a good feeling in FP3, but he couldn‘t enter Q2 directly, missing out by 0.128s. We know all riders are very close so it‘s always a guess who will go through. In Q1, he did an amazing job, that allowed him to enter Q2. It's not been easy, but he did his fastest lap alone. That‘s a very good sign, and it‘s highly important for his motivation. The second part of the qualy was ok, and tomorrow he will start from the 15th position. I think we could have done something more, but the bike was not at its 100%, and Manu needs a bit more experience to manage the qualifying session. Kubo improved his lap time, and that‘s positive, but everybody else did the same, and we achieved a good pace too late. We will discuss our strategy for tomorrow‘s Warm Up, with the aim to try to find an improvement for the race. It will be important for him to make a good start and to stay with other riders."

"My best lap time of FP3 has been cancelled, so I had to join Q1 to enter the Q2. I pushed very hard, and I did it, arriving in the top 4 and entering the next session. I did my fastest lap alone, and that‘s very positive. For the Q2, we changed something on the setting of the bike, but unfortunately it didn‘t work as expected, and my feeling was not as before. I‘m really looking forward to tomorrow‘s race!"

"We changed the setting of the bike for FP3, and my feelings were better with the new adjustments. The lap time was not as I expected in the morning, so for Q1 I tried to change my riding style, and I improved by almost a second. All the riders did the same, so my efforts were not enough to achieve a great result and a good position on the grid for the race. Anyway, I think we learned something from today. I‘ll do my best tomorrow."
