Yamaha VR46 Master Camp Team Embark on Hot Catalan GP

Yamaha VR46 Master Camp Team‘s Manuel Gonzalez battled the heat at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya today, securing 16th place in the combined timesheets. Stefano Manzi is replacing Keminth Kubo this Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya weekend. The Italian finished in 22nd place in the overall Friday results.

Yamaha VR46 Master Camp Team‘s Manuel Gonzalez is a big fan of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. He worked relentlessly and secured P16 in the combined FP results. Replacement rider Stefano Manzi made another successful return to the Moto2. He was quick to adapt to the bike and ended the first day in 22nd place in the combined results.

Gonzalez started the Catalan GP feeling positive. He enjoyed riding at the Montmeló track again for the first time since the test, though the temperatures were much higher. He finished FP1 in 16th place with a best time of 1‘45.395s, set on lap 12/16.

The #18 rider was keen to make another step in the afternoon, but an 11-degree increase in track temperature made it difficult. The Spaniard set a 1‘45.548s on lap 4/16, that put him in 15th place in the FP2 timesheets. His FP1 result saw him in 16th position in the combined results.

Manzi made a smooth transition from WorldSSP to Moto2 again today. He ended his first run with a 1‘45.918s on lap 9/16. Unable to make further progress in his following two runs due to a problem with the front brakes, he completed FP1 in 22nd place. The Italian found an improvement in FP2. Despite the heat, he put in another 18 laps.

The hard work earned him the satisfactory feeling of being one of only ten riders able to improve on their morning time. He posted a 1‘45.832s that earned him 19th in the FP2 rankings and 22nd in the combined timesheets.

This was a very productive Friday. My feelings with the bike weren‘t bad but also nothing special. We tried a lot of things, but we still need to find something to make the last step. We have a margin to improve for tomorrow.

It was not the best day for me. We had to fix a problem in the morning, so I didn‘t ride a lot. The afternoon went better. We solved the problem, and I could ride more. The track was a bit slower, but we tried to push. My fastest lap has been cancelled, but it was not much better than the second fastest one. Of course, I missed the last race, which most other Moto2 riders did participate in, so for sure this doesn‘t help. Anyway, I‘m happy to be back with the team. I‘ll keep working with them so we can do another step for tomorrow‘s qualifying.

Manu tried two different swingarms during FP1, and he decided on which one he prefers for this weekend. We have to work on his set-up. He rode with the old tyres for many laps in order to get a better understanding of how they'll work during the race. Anyway, we are not that far from the front riders, only 0.7s. We will continue working on it today in preparation for tomorrow. During FP1, Manzi had to break in the front brakes twice, so he lost some opportunity to achieve a good lap time. Then in FP2, he felt better on the bike, but he‘s still far from the top. He too has to work on the set-up, in particular for the front side of the bike.
