Sensational Sepang one-two for PETRONAS Yamaha SRT

The PETRONAS Yamaha Sepang Racing Team duo of Fabio Quartararo and Franco Morbidelli have had a sensational opening day of action at the Sepang International Circuit, ending their first day of 2019 Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix track time at the team’s home race in first and second.

Quartararo opened the scorecard well in this morning’s FP1 session to lead a PETRONAS Yamaha SRT one-two, taking the top spot from his team-mate by a mere 0.083 secs with a new lap record time of 1min 59.027secs. However, that time wasn’t to stand for long, with Quartararo blitzing his opposition in the final minutes of FP2 to end the day with a new record of 1min 58.576secs and a gap of over half a second back to overall second place and 0.630 ahead of second in the session.

Morbidelli was able to get his weekend off in perfect form in FP1 by showing his speed around the 5.5km circuit on time attack, setting a lap time of 1min 59.110secs. Concentrating on race pace and setting development in the afternoon’s FP2 session after showing his time attack potential, his time from FP1 was good enough to ensure that he ended the day in second, 0.534secs behind his team-mate and 0.096secs clear of third.

Track action at the 2019 Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix continues tomorrow with practice at 1050 local time, ahead of qualifying at 1505 and Sunday’s 20-lap race at the Sepang International Circuit.

“The lap was really incredible - and my second time attack would have even better but I caught some traffic. The most important thing is that we’re really safe in progressing directly to Q2 for tomorrow. That means that in the morning we can concentrate on working on which tyres to choose for the race, although already our pace and our rhythm are strong. My ankle has been quite painful after the crash last weekend in Australia, but when you’re P1 and you’ve got good pace on the bike you’re able to forget about it a little bit! The news that I’ll have a 2020 A-spec bike next year is a big surprise and I need to say thanks to Yamaha, PETRONAS and the team for making it happen - but we still need to focus on the last two races of 2019 for now.”

“It’s a perfect way for our team to start the weekend finishing one-two today. This morning was excellent, and this afternoon we were able to try some things on the bike to improve our settings. It didn’t go the way we wanted it to, but it has helped us to understand some things, and the important thing is that I’m much faster than I was in Australia. We need to find something here and there on the bike, but if we keep on going the way we’re working then there’s a good chance of a double front row start for Sunday.”
