Binder Starts with Top 20 Result in Barcelona, Dovizioso Close Behind

The WithU Yamaha RNF MotoGP Team concludes Friday at the Catalan Grand Prix with room to improve.

Just five days after the Italian Grand Prix finished, the WithU Yamaha RNF MotoGP Team has been back in action today at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The ninth round of the MotoGP World Championship 2022 started in hot conditions and will most likely continue to be a heat challenge for men and material.

WithU Yamaha RNF MotoGP Team’s premier class rookie Darryn Binder wasn’t affected by the weather at all. He started off in 24th this morning in Free Practice one, riding his Yamaha YZR-M1 for the first time at the Catalan track, which is closest to his second home in Andorra. In Free Practice two this afternoon, he managed to improve on his fastest time from this morning by more than one second in order to climb up into the top 20.

Meanwhile routineer Andrea Dovizioso, who continues to struggle to adapt his riding style to his Yamaha YZR-M1 machine this year, tried his best in FP2 to finish just 0.427 seconds behind the top 10. Although the Italian managed to go 0.515 seconds faster in the second session of the weekend, he ended up in 21st position of the overall standings, but won’t stop trying his best in order to improve his feeling and his position for Free Practice three tomorrow at 09:55 local time.

“It has been super cool to ride here in Barcelona on the MotoGP bike and I really enjoyed the circuit on this machine. It’s been a tricky day anyway, as the grip levels are a little bit low. In FP2, I felt good on the bike overall, I feel like I'm still heading into the right direction, picking up where I left off in Mugello, so I’m very happy about that. I felt quite strong in FP2 and I’m looking forward to tomorrow to keep improving. Let’s see what happens.”

“We tried a different setup, which is completely strange for the Yamaha. You work a lot to create grip or you change the setup completely against the grip and nothing is different. So, we just confirmed that this area on the bike is pretty tricky. With this big change, in any case, I didn’t feel well enough to be faster, which is pretty disappointing. Let’s try again tomorrow morning, as the grip will be completely different again, so we just hope for the best.”
