At the age of just 17, Darryn Binder made his debut in the MotoGP paddock in 2015, racing in the Moto3 championship. The South African had a difficult start, but was able to fit the ground running in 2016, with a breakthrough fourth-place result in Phillip Island.
He matched his best result the following season at Mugello, and despite missing five rounds, was still able to better his overall result from the previous year. In 2018, Binder stood on a Grand Prix podium for the first time, finishing third at Motegi and was a regular top 10 finisher.
In 2019, he improved his best result to second, which he took in Argentina, with Binder becoming a race-winner for the first time in 2020, taking victory in Barcelona and finishing eighth in the final standings. Despite missing out on victory in 2021, Binder was an established front-runner and ended the campaign seventh overall.
His improvements were noticed by the WithU Yamaha RNF MotoGP Team and he joins veteran rider Andrea Dovizioso at the squad for his maiden MotoGP season in 2022.
