'Federici wins the second moto in fantastic style

Race

The Swiss 125cc Motocross Grand Prix at the Roggenburg circuit provided an eventful race for the young Italian Yamaha rider, Claudio Federici. After an excellent qualifying session the youngster made a slow start in the first moto but managed to battle his way back into fifth place. In the second moto, Federici made an incredible start and didn't look back, winning the second race with a gap of 11.499 seconds. Fellow Yamaha riders Carl Nunn and Luca Cherubini finished the weekend in ninth and thirteenth overall, respectively. Qualification: Federici made a rocket start to the weekends racing by qualifying in first place in his respective group in his first outing to the Roggenburg circuit. " I really like this circuit, although it is the first time I have raced here I know it is important to have a very good setting and power on my bike. My Yamaha worked really well and I believe I am in a good position for the races tomorrow. It's important that I do well because I want to close the gap on Chiodi in the Championship standings. This is why my goal is to win this weekend," a positive Federici commented.

Federici's De Carli team-mate, Cherubini, also had an impressive qualifying session and finished in second place in his respective group. " This is my best result in qualifying for a while," said Cherubini. "I am very happy and I hope to do as well in the races tomorrow. In the free practice I learnt the track and in the middle of qualification I was really riding fast."

Nunn made a positive start and qualified in third in his respective group after overcoming a problem in the free practice period. " After the storm last night the track was in perfect condition. I had some sort of problem in free practice as I never found the good lines. I was a little nervous at the beginning of qualifying as I dropped down the table, but at about half way through the session I made a fast time. I hope that for tomorrow that I will finish in the top five," he commented.

Race one: Federici made a disappointing start and was in ninth position on the first lap but battled his way up into sixth place, and on the last lap he managed to overtake Steve Ramon to cross the finish line in fifth place. " I made a mistake at the start, and I think that this was down to the choice of tyres as I believed the track to be muddy. I found that during the race there were not so many good racing lines, therefore making it difficult to move in front of other riders, " Federici commented.

Nunn made the best start out of all the Yamaha riders and was in the top six at the end of lap one, but within the first fifteen minutes he crashed hard and found it difficult to regain his position. " I had a stupid crash in the middle of the first heat," said Nunn. "And after that I lost the feeling with the track." He finally finished the race in twelfth place.

Cherubini also made a slow start and was in eighth place and spent many laps trying to find a good rhythm and eventually finished the race in fifteenth place.

Race two: Federici made a terrific start as he took the holeshot and powered away from the rest of the field without any problems. Mike Brown who was lying in second place, tried to catch the Yamaha rider but the American did not have the power and speed that Federici possessed. " In the second moto I changed the tyres on my bike and I took a fantastic holeshot at the start. After this I was able to dominate the race, and everything was easy from then on," a delighted Federici commented. Federici crossed the finish line in a brilliant first place.

Nunn made a great start and was chasing second place Brown at the end of the first lap. " I took a great start in the second race and I was closely behind Brown. He made a few mistakes but disappointingly I could not find a way past him. There were so many stones on the track and it was difficult to stay behind him, but Chiodi was behind me and this made me very happy. Chiodi put me under a lot of pressure and just after about thirty minutes he passed me. Although this was frustrating, I am very satisfied with finishing in fourth place," commented Nunn after the race.

Cherubini made a positive start to the race and was in the top five during the first lap. " I was in third place after the start, but at the end of the first lap I lost many positions, so I just pushed as hard as I could to try and get some points." He finished the race in twelfth place.
