The Kemea Trio's Top Ten Triumph
Kemea Yamaha Official MX2 riders Benoit Paturel, Alvin Östlund and Brent Van doninck scorched their way to top ten results at the MXGP of Lombardia - round eleven of the 2017 MX2 World Championship - which took place on the rough and choppy sand of Ottobiano, Italy.
Currently riding in some of the best form of his career, Benoit Paturel charged his way from outside of the top ten to second place in the opening race of the day. An even tougher start in Race 2 saw the Frenchman rally his way forward after going down at turn-one. To start from dead last in the exceedingly hot and humid climate was difficult, but his determination prevailed and he managed to put the struggle aside for seventh place. Physically drained, he finished a well-respected fourth overall and was only 2-points shy of the podium.
After pocketing his first ever top five finish two weeks ago, in Russia, Alvin Östlund is starting to realize his potential. The Swede - who is continuously building confidence and gaining race experience after missing three rounds of the championship due to a shoulder injury - stormed his way forward and around his teammate Brent Van doninck for a solid eighth place finish in race one.
In the final race of the day, Östlund took advantage of a cracking start and used his undeniable sand riding finesse to pass Michele Cervellin for fifth. He found his rhythm almost immediately and maintained that position to the flag, and wrapped up the grand prix in seventh.
Doing his best to turn a blind-eye to the pain he was experiencing, Van doninck - who is carrying a minor wrist injury - managed to grit his teeth for ninth in Race 1. He admittedly struggled with the hot climate all weekend, but particularly in Race 2 where fatigue and lack of strength dropped him back to twelfth. The Belgian's 9-12 result saw him round out the top-ten in the grand prix overall at the MXGP of Lombardia-Italy.
The Kemea Yamaha Official MX2 team heads to Agueda, Portugal for the twelfth round of the FIM MX2 World Championship which will take place in six days' time, on the weekend of July 2nd.
4th GP Overall, 5th MX2 Championship Standings
"The first race was really good for me, but the second race I was pretty disappointed. I really gave my best to come back from a crash on the first lap. I started last and came back to seventh. In the heat I gave my best this weekend, and I will stay positive to get back on the podium. That's my real place."
7th GP Overall, 14th MX2 Championship Standings
"I feel that I had good speed all weekend. I crashed in the Qualifying Race yesterday and only finished 22nd, so today I was out for revenge. I finished 8th and 5th which are results I am really happy with. I think it was my toughest race so far because it was so hot and the track was really rough too."
Brent Van doninck
10th GP Overall, 10th MX2 Championship Standings
"Today was a tough day, for everybody I think, especially with the heat and the temperature. I know that I struggle in the heat, and with my wrist it was really difficult. I felt pretty good in the first race where I was seventh for a long time but I hit the wall with the heat, I had no strength at the end of the race and dropped some places. I am not really happy, but I got some points, so that's good. I hope my wrist gets better in the next week, and I am looking forward to Portugal."
