Geerts Strengthens Third Position in the Championship with Podium Performance in Turkey

Monster Energy Kemea Yamaha MX2's Jago Geerts secured a sixth podium finish of the season at the 17thand penultimate round of the MX2 World Championship in Afyon, Turkey. The 19-year-old Belgian celebrated from the second step and strengthened his grip on the bronze medal in the MX2 Championship Classification, while SM Action M.C. Migliori's Maxime Renaux finished on the same points as the rider that celebrated from the third step.

Warm temperatures and high humidity called for frequent watering of the heavily ripped clay circuit of Afyon, Turkey. This made for a rough, rugged and extremely rutty course which demanded careful line selection and smooth throttle control.

In the opening race of the weekend, Geerts and Renaux blazed out of the gate onboard their YZ250F motorcycles. Renaux had the early advantage and chased the MX2 World Champion Jorge Prado for the first 3-laps before falling from second position.

Capitalizing on Renaux's error, Geerts moved up into second where he finished unchallenged, while the '959' of Renaux bounced back to impressively finish fourth.

Geerts aced his start once again in the final race of the weekend but did not feel comfortable on the heavily watered circuit and was forced back to fifth in the first 10-minutes of the race.

Renaux made up the top-five after a brief off-track excursion on Lap-2 and built his momentum lap after lap to pass Geerts for fourth on Lap-5. After a thrilling battle with Calvin Vlaanderen where they switched fifth and sixth position, Geerts eventually found his rhythm and triumphed the South African rider to finish fifth position, on the heels of Renaux in fourth.

Geerts totals 505 points in his second full term in MX2. He now has a 10-point advantage over Tom Vialle, in fourth, going into the 18th and final round of the season which will take place in five days' time, in Shanghai, China.

Jago Geerts

It was a really good weekend for me, I had a really good first race with second place. I had a good start in the second race but struggled in the first 10 to 15 minutes and dropped back to sixth. In the last 10-minutes, I went a lot better and came back to fifth which was enough for second overall. Of course, I am really happy with that. Now I am looking forward to next week, and to finishing the season strong.
