🇮🇹 It doesn’t stop when you get off the bike. Alex Lowes heads back into the pit box during a free practice session in Imola. The first job for the Pata Yamaha WorldSBK rider after removing his helmet is to debrief with his crew chief, former Supersport World Champion, Andrew Pitt.
The rider’s job is to explain how the bike feels, where it’s strong and where he thinks he’s losing time. The crew chief’s job is to translate that feedback into changes on the bike that bring improvements for the next run. In free practice it’s not all about chasing tenths of a second, it’s also about finding the best set-up for the race.
This may mean compromising with the set-up, giving something away in one area to gain an advantage in another, such as sacrificing outright pace to improve tyre conservation and ensure the tyres last full race distance.
Once the mechanics have made the changes dictated by the crew chief, Lowes puts his helmet back on and heads out to evaluate whether the changes have brought the improvements expected.
This process is repeated until the chequered flag is unfurled to bring the 50-minute session to a close.
