Pole-man Federici finishes on the podium

Race

It looked like Claudio Federici was the man to beat at the Italian GP snatching pole and leading the race from lap two to five, but eventually the fast Italian had to be content with a third place podium.

Pit Beirer followed Federici in fourth and Yves Demaria returned as one of the front-runners with a sixth, after having suffered zero points results in the last two GP’s. Again remarkable was Johnny Auberts who continues his strong form with a seventh position finish.

Dominating force and ’01 Champion Mikael Pichon took his ninth victory of the year.

C. Federici – 3rd / P. Beirer – 4th / Y. Demaria – 6th / J. Aubert – 7th

Obviously Federici was not completely satisfied with his podium result: “I did not feel good out there today. In qualification I was quickest, and I felt very comfortable with the track, but today it was not the same. I quickly realized in the race that winning here today was impossible even when I was leading in the early stages. When Pichon passed me I tried to keep with him, but it was impossible, it was same story when Reed went by. I guess I have to be content with another podium, but I would have loved to win here today of course.”

As most other riders Pit Beirer was not impressed with the track conditions. “I knew that the early laps were important for the end-result and I tried to hold on to my second spot after the start, but my second lap was bad. I lost two positions and could feel my rhythm was not very good. I could not understand why Pichon and Reed passed me so easily as the track was very difficult and overtaking very risky. I guess the other guys behind me found that as well, my fourth position never came under attack anymore”.

Yves De Maria collected ten points despite riding under his normal level. ”I don’t know what it was, just bad lines and making many mistakes, it was very tough early on when everyone was charging. Still I felt good in the first couple of laps and was hoping to keep up with Federici and Beirer, but they were about a second a lap quicker. It was a strange race and things just did not go my way. I missed too many race laps in the last two events so my condition is not optimal”.
