Mahias and Caricasulo Complete YZF-R6 First Touch at Jerez
Yamaha Motor Europe's World Supersport project witnessed its inaugural track action this week as GRT Yamaha Official WorldSSP riders Lucas Mahias and Federico Caricasulo mounted their YZF-R6 challengers for the first time at Circuito de Jerez. Two days of testing at the Spanish track allowed the new recruits to fully acquaint themselves with their machines, and their new team, with the shakedown providing valuable information and positive comments throughout.
Delivering the world's first glimpse of the YZF-R6 MY17 in racing specification, the GRT Yamaha Team's target for its first test concentrated on shakedown evaluations of the WorldSSP-spec engine alongside fine-tuning both riding position and suspension set-up for the French and Italian competitors. Electronic calibration of the brand new engine management system was also carried out garnering encouraging feedback.
Completing 93 and 125 laps of the Andalucían layout respectively with encouraging times collected, Mahias and Caricasulo are eager to return to their Yamaha machines during the official championship tests at Phillip Island next month, encouraged, even at such an early stage in the project, by the high potential on offer in their YZF-R6.
"We have had two good days at Jerez, working hard with the team to continue the progress made with the new bike. For my first time with the new YZF-R6 and in the cold conditions here at Jerez, my best lap is good so I'm happy. My thanks go to Yamaha and the GRT Team for the beautiful bike. Now I'm impatient to start the next test in Australia!"
"We did some great work and tested a lot of things over these two days. I'm really happy with the YZF-R6, and the team as we are already working well. We still have to improve more but I can't wait to be in Phillip Island for the official test and the first race of the season!"
