GRT Yamaha Riders Experience San Juan Circuit for First Time on Friday

GRT Yamaha Riders Experience San Juan Circuit for First Time on Friday

The penultimate round of the 2021 FIM Superbike World Championship season began with the first two Free Practice session at the Circuito San Juan Villicum. Despite a slight delay due to the arrival of a sandstorm on Thursday afternoon, this morning the GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team could finally get back onto the Argentinian track, which had been excluded from the calendar during the Covid-stricken 2020 season.

For both Garrett Gerloff and Kohta Nozane, San Juan represents a brand new challenge. Gerloff, who enjoyed a solid weekend in the last round at Portimão, took advantage of the first day to adapt to the Argentinian circuit as well as to his new Crew Chief, Damiano Evangelisti. The American was immediately competitive in the morning with a sixth place in Free Practice 1 (1’39.589), then further improved his pace in FP2, but an infraction of the track limits at Turn 16 got his fastest time of the day cancelled. He was still ninth overall (1'38.879).

2021 rookie Nozane, instead, took longer to get used to the new circuit but his improvement during the course of the day was impressive. In the morning session, the Japanese rider took his time to learn the San Juan circuit and ended the session in 18th place (1'42.102). He then chose to be more aggressive in the afternoon and, despite still finishing in 17th position, he was more than two seconds faster than in FP1 (1'39.857), having almost halved the gap to the leader.

Friday wasn’t a bad day and this track is super fun. After yesterday’s sandstorm I was a little worried that the track would be very difficult to ride but it turned out not to be the case: the grip was already very good at the end of the first session and it remained so for the rest of the day. The circuit has a very interesting design and I really like it, but I am still trying to find my way around it in order to get the most out of the bike. I want to be more consistent and build from there, but I am happy with the way the team is working and I am ready for tomorrow.

It is my first time at this Argentinian track. In FP1 the track conditions were not so good, but I was way too careful and I couldn’t get a good lap time. In FP2 I was faster, we worked on the long run but I made some mistakes, as the conditions were still not ideal. On Saturday we will continue improving.
