GRT Yamaha Score Double Top 10 Finish in Race 2 at Aragón

GRT Yamaha Score Double Top 10 Finish in Race 2 at Aragón

For the first time this season, GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Junior Team had both riders in the top 10, with Federico Caricasulo and Garrett Gerloff closing the gap to the front in the 2020 FIM Superbike World Championship’s final race at MotorLand Aragón.

The day started with Warm Up, in which Caricasulo set an excellent fifth fastest time, while Gerloff was 14th. Soon after, in the Tissot Superpole Race, the duo finished in 12th and 13th respectively, with a smaller gap from the leader than ever before.

The two rookies then ended the weekend in the best possible way with a solid and consistent performance in Race 2, in which the Italian crossed the line in ninth, ahead of his American teammate, who finished 10th.

After today's results, the GRT Yamaha riders are in 12th (Gerloff, with 39 points) and 13th place (Caricasulo on 36 points) in the WorldSBK championship standings. The next round will be held at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on 18-20 September.

Having finished 11th in the Superpole Race, Ten Kate Yamaha WorldSBK Supported Team's Loris Baz enjoyed a positive step forward in Race 2, with the Frenchman gaining two places from his grid spot to finish eighth.

It was a good day. We narrowed the gap both to the first Yamaha R1 and the leader. Our pace also improved, and Race 2 was really great in that we were able to keep a good pace throughout, so I'm happy. For the next race, we will aim to use all the experience and momentum gained here and to improve even further.

It was a positive and useful weekend because we learned a lot and gathered plenty of information regarding our set-up. I'm a little disappointed, though, because the results didn't demonstrate our excellent potential. For some reason, things in the race didn't go as planned, but in general we have improved a lot and we now have a clearer idea of the direction to take. This is very positive, so I can't wait to get on track in Barcelona, a circuit that I immediately liked during testing. Hopefully, we'll be quick from the beginning with the set-up we have without any big changes. I'm also very happy to have been able to keep close to the other Yamaha's, which is one of our goals.

I did not expect to be able to say this, but in the end we leave Aragón with a positive feeling. Beforehand we knew that it was going to be difficult here, also because we did not take part in the pre-event test. Race 2 was very good this afternoon, although I had a moment with another rider, where I was forced to the outside of the track and that made me fall backwards. My pace in this race was really good. I managed to get back to P8, which is usually not the position where we want to be, however for now I am happy with this result. These two weekends have definitely not been the best, but I am happy for how the guys have given me a competitive bike for the final race. This means that we leave Aragón with a reasonably good feeling. We will continue to work hard and go for it, that is our spirit.
