Nozane Enjoys Strong Performance in Wet Barcelona Race 1

Nozane Enjoys Strong Performance in Wet Barcelona Race 1

GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team’s 2021 FIM Superbike World Championship rookie, Kohta Nozane, enjoyed a positive performance in his first fully wet race at Barcelona, finishing 11th, while teammate Garrett Gerloff’s strong pace shown in the morning’s Free Practice session went unrealised after falling on the sighting lap.

Japanese rider Nozane improved session after session throughout Saturday, going 15th in FP3, before scoring his best qualifying result of the year with a 12th position in the Superpole qualifier (1'41.744).

After his typical stellar start, the Nozane found himself in the middle of the battle inside the Top-10 but his lack of experience with the Pirelli rain tyres soon started showing and he dropped back down the order. As his confidence built, though, the 25-year-old’s pace picked up and he started recovering towards the Top-10, only to eventually miss it by just 0.008s in favour of Chaz Davies.

On the other side of the garage, Gerloff used FP3 to find the outright speed he had been lacking yesterday and, at the end of the session, he was second. The Superpole, though, did not end in the same fashion, and the American was 10th (1'41.405), not having managed to set a faster lap during his second and final attempt. The arrival of the rain for Race 1 saw him fall on the sighting lap, leaving him unable to take the start.

Kohta Nozane: P11

In the Superpole I managed to set a very good lap time and I was happy, but Race 1 was my first-ever wet race and it was very tricky. I had a good start and first lap, but the conditions were very difficult and I had no confidence, so I lost some positions. After 10 laps, though, I tried to change my riding style a little bit and this helped me keep a very good pace for the rest of the race. On the last lap we had a big battle with many riders and I missed out on a top-10 finish to Chaz Davies by the slimmest of margins. It was still a very good race, and tomorrow I hope to do more since it seems that it might be dry.
