2018 WorldSSP Misano - Riviera di Rimini
Dominant Caricasulo secures pole position at Misano
GRT Yamaha Official WorldSSP Team rider Federico Caricasulo will start Round 8 of the FIM Supersport World Championship at Misano from pole position tomorrow, after a dominant performance in Superpole today. Lucas Mahias will start one row further back from position six, while European Supersport Cup rider, Alfonso Coppola, will start from the eighth row in position 22.
Caricasulo judged the conditions perfectly during this afternoon's 15-minute Superpole 2 session, posting a time of 1'37.694 to secure his first pole position of the 2018 season on his penultimate lap. The 22-year-old Italian has been fast all weekend in Misano and heads into tomorrow's 19-lap race determined to fight for the win in front of his home crowd.
Mahias was fastest in both FP2 yesterday and FP3 this morning, but the chance of a front row start in the race was lost due to two small mistakes on the 29-year-old Frenchman's two flying laps in Superpole 2. Mahias will start from the second row tomorrow and is confident that he'll be in the fight for the podium.
It was a difficult qualifying for Coppola, with the increasingly hot conditions making the level of rear grip difficult to assess accurately for the European Supersport Cup rookie. After a near highside at turn eight on his final flying lap Coppola will start tomorrow from the eighth row of the grid.
The GRT Yamaha Official WorldSSP Team riders will be back in action in tomorrow's race, with lights out scheduled for 11.30 CEST.
GRT Yamaha Official WorldSSP Team - P1 - 1:37.694
"I'm really happy with pole position but I'm also pleased about the whole weekend so far, because we were always the fastest. Now I'm ready to capitalise on this pace in the race tomorrow, where I think I can also be fast. This is my home race and it would be nice to mark it with a win, so I'll be pushing hard for that tomorrow."
GRT Yamaha Official WorldSSP Team - P6 - 1:38.754
"It wasn't such a good qualifying for me today, with mistakes on two laps. It's not perfect but I'm still on the second row. I was a little angry with myself because the two errors on these two laps is not good, but I saw in FP3 that my rhythm is good and I'm confident for the race tomorrow."
GRT Yamaha Official WorldSSP Junior Team - P22 - 1:40.262
"It was very hot today and that made it difficult with the tyre. The first run wasn't so good, but I was 15th with only a small gap to the top. On my second run I used the good tyre but grip was hard to find and I had a near highside at turn eight, which lost me time. Now I need to keep calm for tomorrow, work hard in the warm up and see what we can do in the race."
GRT Yamaha Official WorldSSP Team - Team Manager
"I'm happy with today. We knew from yesterday that we could have a good result in qualifying, with Federico showing that we've made a very good step, which is very important. Lucas had just a little mistake on his hot lap otherwise he could also have set a very good lap time today. Unfortunately we didn't find the right solution with Alfonso but we are working and we are confident we can find a good direction. Once again, thank you to Yamaha and the team for the step that has been made. Finally I want to give a big hug to Bruno from the team who was taken ill yesterday and I hope we can win for him tomorrow."
