Yamaha on Top as Aegerter leads van Straalen at Donington Park

Ten Kate Yamaha’s Dominique Aegerter has ended the opening day of track action at Donington Park fastest, beating fellow Yamaha rider Glenn van Straalen to top spot by 0.224 seconds.

FIM Supersport World Championship leader Dominique Aegerter picked up where he left off as round five of the series got underway at Donington Park, setting the day’s fastest time to end Friday action atop of the timesheets.

Eager to get out on track under overcast skies in free practice one, Aegerter immediately set a strong pace as Supersport returned to the British venue for the first time since 2019. Running inside the top ten, the Swiss rider flew to the top of the timesheets at the mid-way stage, before a brief red flag saw him slip back to sixth at the checkered flag. Meanwhile, strong opening sessions for Jules Cluzel and Lorenzo Baldassarri saw the pair inside the top three as the opening 45-minutes came to a close.

As conditions warmed up ahead of free practice two, Aegerter was again quick out of the blocks, running in second before taking the top position with 25-minutes left on the clock. Setting a consistent run in the low 1:30’s, it wasn’t long until the 31-year-old fired a warning shot, as he dipped under the 1:31 barrier, setting a 1:30.939, which proved untouchable for his rivals.

A late charge from Glenn van Straalen saw him finish the opening day of track action in second place. The Dutch podium finisher featured inside the top four for much of the session and ended the second 45-minute affair 0.2224 seconds adrift.

Jules Cluzel backed up his strong free practice one performance with an equally strong second session. The Frenchman was narrowly piped to third place, finishing fourth, 0.275 seconds behind Aegerter.

Meanwhile, Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team’s Lorenzo Baldassarri secured a top six finish as he gets his first taste of what Donington Park has to offer, with Peter Sebestyen in P12 ahead of bLUcRU graduate Unai Orradre, who after a small crash on Friday morning, dusted himself down to finish 13th. VFT Racing duo Marcel Brenner and Kyle Smith wrapped up the day in 14th and 15th.

World Supersport action resumes on Saturday with Superpole setting the grid for race one on Saturday at 15:15 local time.
