The Spanish youngster was unable to set a representative lap time in qualifying, after falling early on, and after climbing back to 11th in Race 1, his performance on Sunday was even more impressive.
Diaz made a superb start to run inside the top 15 by the end of the first lap, making his way through the front group to move into race-winning contention in the final stages. The 18-year-old led coming out the final chicane, but was narrowly beaten on the run to the line, seeing him finish second. The result sees Diaz move to the top of the standings, with an eight-points advantage over Marc Garcia.
2021 Yamaha R3 bLU cRU European Cup winner Iker Garcia Abella added to his points tally in Race 2, running inside the front group for the entire 14 laps, meaning the Yamaha MS Racing rider has now scored points in every race that he’s finished so far in the WorldSSP300 class.
The WorldSSP300 riders will be back in action in three weeks at Estoril, which returns to the calendar after a year’s hiatus in 2021.
