Emotional Maiden WorldSSP300 Podium for Gennai in Race 1 at Assen

Emotional Maiden WorldSSP300 Podium for Gennai in Race 1 at Assen

In the first FIM Supersport 300 World Championship race of the weekend at TT Circuit Assen, Mirko Gennai produced a stunning ride from the sixth row of the grid to take his first-ever podium result in third.

The 19-year-old Italian had qualified 16th on the gird in the morning’s Superpole session, but quickly found himself in the podium battle in the 14-lap race. Gennai headed onto the final lap in seventh, but was able to scythe his way through to cross the line in third.

Also in the podium battle were Aragón race-winner Marc Garcia and 2021 Yamaha R3 bLU cRU European Cup podium finisher Matteo Vannucci, with the pair finishing sixth and seventh respectively.

After falling in qualifying, bLU cRU graduate Alvaro Diaz made up an incredible 18 places to finish 11th, while Yamaha R3 bLU cRU European Cup winner and fellow Spaniard Iker Garcia Abella also managed to score points for the second time in 2022.

Fenton Seabright was in the fight for the podium alongside Gennai, Vannucci and Garcia, having qualified an impressive ninth, but the Viñales Racing Team rider fell at Turn 3 at half-race distance.

Mirko Gennai: P3

This is the best day of my life. It was a really difficult race, when I start, I saw I had a lot of riders in front of me. On the last lap, I managed to take the other riders in my group and finish third. It’s my first podium in the WorldSSP300 and I’m very excited for this. My objective is to try for the same and battle for the podium again in Race 2.
