Gennai and Gaggi Achieve Double Race 1 Podium in Portugal

Gennai and Gaggi Achieve Double Race 1 Podium in Portugal

Team BrCorse riders Mirko Gennai and Marco Gaggi put their blue bikes in first and second in a tense and tight WorldSSP300 Race 1 at Portimão, giving their squad a first ever 1-2 score in the class.

The Autodromo Internacional do Algarve welcomed the riders with glorious weather on Saturday, setting up for a speedy Superpole session. Gennai had strong pace, placing himself in fourth on the grid and setting up nicely for a positive race weekend. After a tricky Friday which left him in 15th, Matteo Vannucci (AG Motorsport Italia Yamaha) found his feet and qualified in a much improved seventh.

As is the norm in the WorldSSP300 class, the race was a hard-fought affair with a big group of riders swopping places corner by corner. This season Gennai has proven time after time how he is able to fight through to the front, and this is exactly what he achieved around the twists and turns of Portimão. The Italian fought it out cleanly with his compatriot and team-mate, Gaggi, for the top spot on the podium. On the final lap a crash from Jose Manuel Osuna brought out the red flag and called the race to a halt. Gennai had his wheels in front on the sector countback, and therefore he achieved his second victory of the season as well as taking the fastest lap. Gaggi took his third podium of the season with an excellent second, and Vannucci managed a cool and calm rise through the field to finish fourth.

Today has been a strange race because we finished with a red flag. I hope Osuna recovers well from this big crash. I was in first position in the last sector when the flags came out, so I got the victory. On the last lap I was prepared in my mind to finish first, and to make the necessary moves, so I’m pleased that I was able to do it. The pace among the riders was slow compared to this morning; I got the fastest lap of the race today but it was two seconds slower than I did in the morning. This is a very beautiful result for my team because this is the first time that I’ve been on the podium with my teammate Marco, and we have a nice relationship so I’m happy. I love this circuit, I love the rollercoaster style, and I want to end my season on a high tomorrow.

Our WorldSSP300 races are always difficult and hard-fought. For the first time this year, I stayed in the Top 5 the entire race, so I managed quite well. I started the last lap in first position and I told myself to push hard the whole lap, finally I couldn’t manage to hold the lead and I finished second but I’m very happy for the team. A 1-2 result for our team is a very great result, I’m happy because they deserve it a lot for the hard work they always do. The objective for tomorrow is to make the same race, being in the front and possibly try to escape with a small group and try to have another great result.
