The Autodromo Internacional do Algarve welcomed the riders with glorious weather on Saturday, setting up for a speedy Superpole session. Gennai had strong pace, placing himself in fourth on the grid and setting up nicely for a positive race weekend. After a tricky Friday which left him in 15th, Matteo Vannucci (AG Motorsport Italia Yamaha) found his feet and qualified in a much improved seventh.
As is the norm in the WorldSSP300 class, the race was a hard-fought affair with a big group of riders swopping places corner by corner. This season Gennai has proven time after time how he is able to fight through to the front, and this is exactly what he achieved around the twists and turns of Portimão. The Italian fought it out cleanly with his compatriot and team-mate, Gaggi, for the top spot on the podium. On the final lap a crash from Jose Manuel Osuna brought out the red flag and called the race to a halt. Gennai had his wheels in front on the sector countback, and therefore he achieved his second victory of the season as well as taking the fastest lap. Gaggi took his third podium of the season with an excellent second, and Vannucci managed a cool and calm rise through the field to finish fourth.
