Gennai Leads the Yamaha Charge in WorldSSP300 at Portimao

Mirko Gennai ended the opening day of the final round of the 2022 FIM Supersport 300 World Championship in third on the combined timesheets, just ahead of Alvaro Diaz, who needs just one point over the course of the weekend to secure the title in Portugal.

Diaz heads into the finale of the 2022 WorldSSP300 season with a 50-point lead in the standings and needs to secure a single point to ensure he is crowned champion, and the bLU cRU graduate was on the pace during both of Friday’s Free Practice sessions.

Italian Gennai set a 1’55.697 in FP1 to secure third fastest overall on Friday, with Diaz setting his best time in FP2, 0.032s further back in fourth, as both riders looked strong around the 4.6km Autodromo Internacional do Algarve.

2022 Yamaha R3 bLU cRU European Cup winner Enzo Valentim also impressed in just his third WorldSSP300 outing, ending the day 16th on combined times.

Yamaha’s WorldSSP300 riders are back in action on Saturday at 9:45 am local time (UTC+1) for Superpole, with the lights for Race 1 going out at 12:40 pm, where young Spaniard Diaz will have his first opportunity to clinch the championship.
