The FIM WorldSSP300 Championship riders attacked the Circuit of Barcelona-Catalunya on Saturday morning for their Superpole session, and it was Maier who came out on top with a great lap time, over half a second faster than his nearest rival. Indonesia’s Galang Hendra Pratama (Sublime Racing by MS Racing) also had a great session, placing 5th on his first qualifying outing of the season. Matteo Vannucci (AG Motorsport Italia Yamaha) got 7th on the grid, and his compatriot and team-mate Raffaele Tragni rounded out the Top 10.
When the race rolled around it was the usual tiny gaps and fierce battles. Gennai proved his pace and potential by completing a superb comeback from 20th on the grid, carving his way through the pack. Meanwhile, Maier stayed in podium contention until the last moments of the race when he slipped to 5th. Vannucci took 8th at the line ahead of Hendra Pratama (10th) and Enzo Valentim (11th).
The race saw very high attrition, and promising R3 riders Unai Calatayud, Gabriele Mastroluca, and Tragni all crashed out.
