Vannucci and Gaggi Achieve Double Podium for Yamaha in Aragon

Vannucci and Gaggi Achieve Double Podium for Yamaha in Aragon

The Italian pairing of Matteo Vannucci and Marco Gaggi put their Yamahas on the rostrum on Sunday at Motorland Aragon after another typically exciting and close-run WorldSSP300 race. Mirko Gennai recouped from a bad Saturday to finish fourth on Sunday.

Vannucci (AG Motorsport Italia Yamaha) once again took advantage of his pole position to get off to a great start as he attempted to catch the early leader. However, as is often the case in the class, a huge lead pack of competitive riders were ready to trade blows. The young Italian struck the balance well between defending his place and continuing to chase the race header. By Lap 4 he had made the leap into the lead, but several laps of battling ensued. Vannucci continued to fight for victory for the entire 12-lap scrap, and he managed to achieve a great second place at the line. This result moves him into fourth in the standings. Gaggi (Team BrCorse) had a similar story as he showed great form to remain in contention throughout, and despite a track limits warning on the penultimate lap, he pushed on for an excellent third place and his second podium of the season.

After a disheartening Saturday which saw Gennai finish outside the points thanks to a jumpstart and subsequent double long lap penalty, the young BrCorse rider showed all the tenacity and grit that he has become known for. From a lowly 26th on the grid the Italian carved through the field to lead the race and stay in the podium fight until the last lap where a small mistake pushed him back to fourth. Nevertheless, a great comeback and useful result for his title chances.

I’m happy about this Race 2, and for Portimão I hope to do better in Race 1 and Superpole. Today I really enjoyed the riding, and it made up for yesterday’s disappointing result when I was 13th. I’m happy and I want to say thanks to my team, my parents and my fans. The race was still difficult because there was a big group and some riders were weaving on the straight to avoid giving slipstream, but second is a nice result. For the championship I’m in fourth position, 63 points off Buis, but I’ll try to take second position at least.

I’m very happy for this podium, my second this year and my first in fully dry conditions. We have been closer and closer in each race and finally I achieved it. I’m happy because this is a track that I love. On Friday we were very fast, also in other sessions we’ve been very fast, but it was a very bad qualifying. However, I managed the race well from the very beginning, step by step I came up to the group and we got to the podium. In the last straight I was also believing in the victory, but finally it was not possible so I’m happy with the podium. Today’s points are important also for the Teams’ Championship, so in Portimão we will see if I can get my first victory. I like the track, it’s my second favourite after Aragon.
