Böhnke closes in on YXZ1000R Germany Cup Stock title at Olszyna
The fifth round of the 2019 YXZ1000R Germany Cup saw Christian Böhnke close in on the Stock class title victory in the German Cup at the Motorpark Olszyna in Poland on 16-18 August. Hosted alongside the 24-hour off-road race of the German Off-Road Masters (GORM), teams enjoyed perfect weather conditions all weekend during the best German round of the year so far.
In a new format for the National Cup, the drivers at Olszyna competed in three two-hour races over a challenging and technical 20km circuit. The round also saw three newcomers to the YXZ1000R Germany Cup; Peter Linnè, Markus Bielenberg and Berndb Schumacher, bringing the total of German teams up to seven.
Despite not having raced since round four at the beginning of June, Böhnke was on form immediately and set the fastest time in qualifying, allowing him to start ahead of the field and avoid the worst of the particularly dusty trails of Olszyna. Qualifying was a big success for Yamaha vehicles also, with all seven YXZ1000Rs within the top ten on a grid of nearly forty Side-by-Sides.
The demanding track put every team to the test, divided roughly into an opening half of twisty corners leading into a second half of high-speed sections. Böhnke lead from the start of Race One and dominated to take the opening victory, more than eight minutes ahead of second placed Open class leader Thomas Ziegltrum and third placed Peter Linnè.
The second race started in similar fashion with Böhnke racing into the lead, and an on-form Ziegltrum behind getting closer with each lap. Böhnke’s fortunes were not to last however, when he was forced to retire from the race due to overheating problems and the loss of his radiator cover. Ziegltrum then took the lead and brought home the race victory, ahead of Schumacher and Linnè.
Before the third race began Cup leader Böhnke withdrew after suffering from a stomach illness. Continuing his strong pace, Ziegltrum put the hammer down and took a second consecutive victory at Olszyna. After three races across 370km the YXZ1000R Germany Cup saw Böhnke tighten his grip on the Stock title, with only Renato Heinrich now with an outside mathematical chance to deny him, and Ziegltrum closing in on the Open title.
The sixth and final round of the 2019 YXZ1000R Germany Cup takes place at Olszyna again on the 21st September
